Ok…so my friend Mario, whom I know from work has a band called Red Carpet Masquerade. The band features Marcello Izzo on Vocals, Mario Izzo on Lead Guitar, Gorgy on Drums and Steve Clark on Guitars. They have released their first single and video off their new album that is due out May 31st! That’s right folks, May 31st. Only a few weeks away. The album is titled “Jealousy Kills.”

Their new single “Big Man” can be seen on You Tube as well as Facebook. I have it on my Facebook page as well. Let me start out by saying that I believe this band has a real shot at making it big! Now most people would say I am biased. However, check out the Video. This Video is put together extremely well and was filmed on a haunted property in South New Jersey.

“Big Man” has an awesome intro and vibe and creates a true enigma of sound. Marcello is very well versed on vocals and his voice fits the style of music perfectly. Mario and Steve are stellar on Guitars and the song features some catchy riffs! Check this video out ASAP! It’s hot guys, trust me. Red Carpet Masquerade. New album Jealousy Kills due out on May 31st. Check the single “Big Man” out on You Tube! Rock on my friends!

Whenever one sets out on a journey to come up with a list of the “top” anything or anyone…there is always a matter of opinion that goes along with it. This opinion may be based on biased stereotypes or ones own passion and favorites. Embarking on any of these Top Lists takes a lot of research and knowledge. It also takes a keen ear and eye. In this post I will attempt to give you my Top 50 Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Vocalists of all time.

In order to make this list, the vocalist must be multi talented as well as full of ambition on the stage. These vocalists are above the normal singer that just walks the stage. These front men are confident. These singers are dangerous, loud, hit all ranges, are able to sing melody as well as scream, and share many other qualities. Without further a due…let us get to my Top 50 Vocalists of all time. As I said…these lists are always a matter of interpretation and there may be those people who disagree. Feel free to give your feedback.

1) Rob Halford- The famous front man for Judas Priest as well as Fight and even his own solo gig. Rob Halford not only plays the “Bad Ass”, but he backs it up with his voice. He probably has the greatest range in Metal as far as singing deep and also screaming vengeance

2) Robert Plant- Plant was the prototype lead singer and front man for Led Zeppelin and will always be at the top of any Top Vocalist list wether all time or hard rock or metal or just in general. Plant can hit just about every range and does it easily.

3) Ronnie James Dio- Dio started with Elf…then Rainbow…then Black Sabbath and then solo. No matter what lineup he was in or who his band mates were, Dio was always one of if not the best vocalists of all time. Dio could hit every note as well.

4) Bruce Dickinson- Bruce Has been the unquestioned leader of Iron Maiden since its inception in the early eighties…Dickinson has also done a few solo projects. Bruce can sing with the best of them and he also can put on a show. He may have one of the best stage presences in Metal.

5) Freddy Mercury- Queen was a huge success in the seventies and eighties. Much of this success was due to Mercury and his ability to rock the house and get the crowd going. Freddy had no problem hitting all those high notes and made it look easy.

6) Axl Rose- Axl could have been so much more. Guns N Roses had a short lives career, I mean the original Guns…and Axl played the BAD Ass and he backed it up on the microphone. Axl was always using controversial language and could also hit every note.

7) Sebastian Bach- Sebass was the lead vocalist for Skid Row and now has his own solo gig. Sebastian has an extraordinary voice and can sing the ballads as well as scream the heavy thrash tone. He could probably be higher on the list but he has not had the years or the experience that these other vocalists have had.

8) Steven Tyler- Tyler does not have the voice he once had. However, in his prime Tyler was at the top of the vocalist pedestal. Aerosmith was and still is one of the Top Hard Rock bands of its time and Tyler was the driving force.

9) Michael Sweet- Yes…We are counting Christian Metal on this list. This is a list of all Hard Rock and Metal. Michael Sweet is extremely underrated as a musician and is even more underrated as a vocalist. Stryper was never an extremely popular metal band but Sweet could sing with the best of them.

10) Chris Cornell- Some people may be surprised to see Cornell in the Top 10, but not anyone who was a fan of Sound-garden or Audioslave. Cornell has an extremely melodic tone and can scream or sing harmony and change on a dime. Cornell will always be at the top of my list.

11) David Lee Roth- David was the first frontman of Van Halen who are one of the Godfathers of Metal. Roth can hit every note and he has that famous Roth snarl. David still hits those high notes like he is 21 again.

12) Paul Rodgers- Bad Company is in Good Company here. Rodgers has a tremendous voice and would be a great singer on any band.

13) David Coverdale- Coverdale has always been at the top of his game when it comes to pounding out lyrics. From Deep Purple to WhiteSnake. Coverdale was even recruited by Jimmy Page to do a solo album. Coverdale sounds almost like Robert Plant…like a spitten image. If you ever want to hear a great song with awesome range listen to In The Still of The Night.

14) Geddy Lee- Lee is most noted for his empiracle lyrics for RUSH. Lee sometimes even sounds like a woman when he sings…he can hit the highest notes with ease.

15) Geoff Tate- Tate is the Front Man for Queensryche. Tate has a very powerful voice and can also sing ballads like he is in a choir. Case in point Silent Lucidity.

16) Mick Jagger- The Rolling Stones front man can still hit those high notes all these years later. Jagger is one of those singers that you look at and wonder where he gets his voice at. If you could judge a book by its cover, Jagger would not make this list.

17) Steve Perry- Perry was the face of Journey. Journey was known for their Rock Ballads but Perry could sing those faster heavier tones when required to do so and could also change on a dime.

18) Sammy Hagar- Sammy was the second front man for Van Halen. One could say that VH did not miss a beat as far as vocals when Hagar replaced Roth. Hagar may not have the same stage presence of Roth but he can sing his ass off.

19) Paul Stanley- Stanley is KISS. Well he is just one part of KISS but probably the most integral part to the band. He has a distinct voice and can hit every note and chord.

20) Maynard- The lead singer of TOOL. Maynard could very easily be in the Top 10. Part of my list is based on the popularity of the band but I also tried to rank them by voice talent and potential. The sky is the limit for Maynard.

21) Eddie Vedder- Eddie has one of those voices that is underrated. Until you hear him really sing you may not see him for the real him. Listen to some of those early songs and lyrics from Pearl Jams first album.

22) Don Dokken- Don could hit the ballads and the hard stuff as well.

23) Corey Taylor- Taylor is the lead singer for Slipknot and Stone Sour. Taylor has the voice that can rattle every fan. Listen to the difference between Slipknot and Stone Sour. Some people may say this is too high but I believe he has one of those master sounds.

24) Joe Elliot- Today Elliot cannot hit those ranges he used to hit on High and Dry, Pyromania, and Hysteria but Elliot remains one of the Top vocalists of all time. When he was in his prime he may have been in the top 10.

25) John Bon Jovi- John Bon Jovi has a magical voice. He can sing the high ranges like on Bad Medicine and then hit the low ones like on Wanted Dead or Alive.

26) Alice Cooper- Cooper is very underrated as a singer. I think he got better with age as he learned to be more melodic and symphonic.

27) Layne Staley (Alice In Chains)

28) Roger Daltrey (Pink Floyd)

29) Tommy Keifer (Cinderella)

30) Vince Neil (Mötley Crüe)

31) Jimi Hendrix (Same)

32) David Wayne (Metal Church)

33) Blackie Lawless (WASP)

34) Stephen Pearcy (RATT)

35) Brett Michaels (Poison)

36) Klaus Meine (Scorpions)

37) Steve Marriott (Humble Pie)

38) Brian Johnson (AC/DC)

39) Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)

40) Philip Anselmo (Pantera)

41) Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)- this may seem very low but Ozzy never had a stellar voice.

42) Scott Stapp (Creed)

43) Anthony Keidis (Red Hot Chili Pepper)

44) Joey Belladonna (Anthrax)

45) Serj Tankian (System of a Down)

46) Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails)

47) James Herfield (Metallica)

48) David Bowie

49) Rod Stewart

50) Marilyn Manson

Ok…that’s my Top 50. Not an easy list and I’m very sure I missed some. Feel free to add to the list.

STRYper: The Covering

In one of my prior posts I mentioned that the band Stryper had released an album of all cover songs called “The Covering.” The album is an instant masterpiece. Michael Sweet has one of the better voices in Metal and his Guitar playing is brilliant. I have heard many Cover albums…Spaghetti Incident (Guns N Roses), Garage Inc. (Metallica), and many more.

What makes this cover album stand out is the great songs that are covered and the star power of the bands that originally produced them. Michael Sweet was also playing with Boston the past few years. Not only is the choice of music stellar, but the quality of their versions is awesome.

They nail every song on the album, including their two singles that were released “Heaven and Hell” and “Carry on my Wayward Son”. The best covers in my opinion are “Blackout (Scorpions), Wayward Son (Kansas), Highway Star (Deep Purple), Over The Mountain (Ozzy), and The Trooper (Iron Maiden). As always, every time a star band produces a cover they usually put their own style, mix and spin on the tune.

From Track 1 (Set Me Free) to the final tune a brand new studio song “God” written by Stryper, the songs kick ass. Every song on the album sounds near exact to the original. Michael Sweet has a good disposition as far as hitting the different notes on the different songs. I rate this album a 9/10 and would highly recommend any true Metal Fan to purchase this album due to its variety and notoriety.

At the end of this month, Stryper will release a brand new album “Second Coming.” The more that I listen to their material, the more I recognize how good of a band they really are. I mean I realize they are a Christian Metal band and that they never really got the airplay that they deserved. However, Stryper is an extremely talented ban not only musically but also lyrically. Michael Sweet has one of those rare voices that can hit all the highs and lows. I mean, when it comes go vocalists you have Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickenson, Sebastian Bach, Axl Rose, and Jani Lane. I put Sweet on the map with these guys.

Purchase this album, which was released in 2011 pop it into your CD player and Rock Out! I am so looking forward to this spring with all of the new material that is being released by many great bands. I will be doing some special blogs on my top metal artists including best vocalists, best guitarists, best drummers, and best bassists. I am sure Michael Sweet will be on one of those lists. I will also be doing my Top 10 Metal Albums as well as Hard Rock albums.

My fellow metal heads, buy this album. You definitely will not be disappointed. And you may even agree that this band is underrated and not given the praise they are truly due. Until next time, ROCK ON!

It has become an ongoing trend the past few years for bands that have not released new studio material in some time to get back in the grind to release new albums. Last year we saw SoundGarden, Aerosmith, KISS, Megadeth, Queensryche, Testament, Sevendust, and many other iconic bands release brand new studio albums. After listening to all of these new albums, there is one noticeable difference in the sound quality. Music Technology has hit a home run as these new albums that are being produced have such good sound quality.

It is 2013 already, and bands are already making their mark. Bullet For My Valentine released Temper Temper. This is their fourth full studio album, coming after Fever, Scream Aim Fire, and their first album The Poison. Although one may argue that Scream Aim Fire was their best all around album to date, Temper Temper does have that extra bump in sound quality that is being described. The one problem that arises with certain bands like Bullet, is that the style of music makes a lot of their material sound mundane.

BuckCherry also just released their new album “Confessions”. This album gets an 8/10 in my eyes. There is superb sound quality and they left their old label to reach new heights. This album has more of the raunchy feel of their very first album but also incorporates some new style. I highly recommend any one who enjoys straight in your face rock n roll to purchase this album. The first song Gluttony is an in your face onslaught about addiction. Nothing Left But Tears is my favorite track on the album. This album has a Velvet Revolver Billy Idol combination of sound.

Ok…these are just two examples of new albums that have been released in 2013. Anthrax will be releasing a new album at the end of March that is a compilation of Cover Songs from the sixties and seventies. This should be a true hit as Anthrax always has a way of making any song sound like their specific style. Michael Sweet has left Boston and has rejoined his original band Stryper, who will be releasing their first new Studio Album since 2009. The album is titled Second Coming and is said to sound like the original Stryper, adding some heavier riffs. This should also be a great addition to the 2013 release party.

Bon Jovi will be releasing a new studio album “What about Now” On March 11th. I have not been able to sample much of it, but the few songs I did hear sound like classic Bon Jovi, which is good considering they have become so mainstream.

The following bands will be releasing new studio albums in the coming months:
David Bowie, Clutch, Sevendust, Killswitch Engage, Paramore, Fallout Boy, Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot, Alice In Chains, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, Iron Maiden, Limp Bizkit, Motörhead, Pearl Jam, Sixx Am, Suicidal Tendencies, and Volbeat are all slated for new albums in 2013.

Slayer is working on new material which could also make the 2013 cut. No matter what, it should be a great year for Rock N Roll/Heavy Metal Fans. Keep supporting Metal and be sure to watch That Metal Show every week with Eddie Trunk. There is great material each week and plenty of guest appearances from the band members we have grown to love. There are also many up and coming bands that are making their way to the spotlight. My friend Mario’s band Red Carpet Masquerade is a band to keep an eye on in 2013! Long Live Metal! Rock on Folk

So in the past two weeks, two very good bands have released new albums. Last Week Bullet For My Valentine released Temper Temper which also includes a bonus three tracks including a cover of the AC/DC hit Whole Lotta Rosie. The First track of the album has the typical hard and heavy intro that we as metal fans have grown accustomed too from Bullet. The song, titled Breaking Point is pretty self explanatory with a theme that replicates being pushed to your limit. Lines like “Scratch the Surface” and Breaking Point are used to describe this phenomenon. The Truth Hurts is the second track and really has some unique sounding guitar and hard hitting base and drum solos.

Bullet For My Valentine continues to be a strong force in the metal community. Every song on the album brings maximum energy to the fore front including the self titled “Temper Temper”, the single “Riot”, Tears Don’t Fall Part II which is the sequel to Tears Don’t Fall on their second album The Poison. As mentioned, they also cover A Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC and also share a live version of Scream Aim Fire. I rank this album right there with Scream Aim Fire and The Poison as solid metal albums. Their last album Fever took a step backwards, but I believe that this album has the band back on track. They are set to your the US this summer. Stay Tuned.

Another Band, Buck Cherry released their new album “Confessions” this past Tuesday. Buck Cherry is now considered a “Veteran Band” as they have been around since the late nineties. They burst onto the scene with the single “Lit Up”, which is a song that documents the party scene and drug usage, mainly Cocaine. Of course, this song was considered controversial when it was released and is still frowned upon by some major Metal Publications. The band is also known for a few other big hits…one of them being Ride.

Buck Cherry is a metal band that has the same roots as Guns N Roses. This band is probably as close to the sound that GNR produced during the late eighties early nineties. Confessions is a collaboration of different styles and is probably the most diverse record released by Buck Cherry to date. The first song Gluttony is exactly like the title states…about people who want things in excess. The Guitar Solos are very tight and to the point.

Bullet For My Valentine and Buck Cherry are both bands that I would consider above average. I recommend both if these albums to any fan that enjoys good old hard rock n roll and hard core metal. Bullet is kind of in the mold of Avenged Sevenfold, but also has the same style of Linkin Park. Buck Cherry is more of a straight up kick your ass style of Hard Rock and they also have the occasional ballad. In retrospect…both of these albums are must haves for any true metal fan. Stay tuned for many other great albums that are due out this spring and summer. Anthrax, Stryper, Megadeth, Slayer, Volbeat, Deftones, and many more are due out in the near future. Too all of my Metal Fans…ROCK ON!

I just purchased Bon Jovi’s album Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection. This is a compilation album consisting of two discs. The first disc is a collection of the Band’s top hits as well as two new songs: “What do you Got?” and “No Apologies.” The second disc is a collection of fan favorites as well as two more new songs: “This is Love, This is Life” and “The More Things Change.” Listening to the album song by song gives me goosebumps. I remember as a teenager hearing my very first Bon Jovi song…”Wanted Dead or Alive.” When I first heard Bon Jovi on the radio…I was instantly hooked. I have since then purchased every studio album that the band has produced. Just like the living legend…”Bruce Springsteen- “The Boss”…the band Bon Jovi originated in New Jersey. The band’s debut album was self titled Bon Jovi. “Bon Jovi was recorded at the Power Station in New York City and was released on January 21, 1984. Bon Jovi made 43 on the Billboard 200 Chart List. The most famous single from this album is “Runaway”, which truly put Bon Jovi on the MAP. It was Bon Jovi’s very first Top 40 Hit and reached #39 on the charts. The Debut album has sold over 3,500,000 million copies worldwide and 2x Platinum in the US. Bon Jovi went on to release their second album 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit on March 27, 1985. The album reached #37 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and reached platinum status in the United States. This album has sold over 2,500,000 million copies worldwide. The number one hit from this album is the single “In and Out of Love.” Slippery When Wet…the Third Studio Album released by the Band on August 18, 1986 was an instant CLASSIC. The album spent 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200, was named the Top Selling Album for 1987, has went 12x Platinum in the US and sold over 28 million copies worldwide. This album is so famous that its featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Three of Bon Jovi’s top hits came from Slippery When Wet: You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin’ on A Prayer, And Wanted Dead or Alive.” Slippery When Wet ranks in my Top 10 Albums of all time. This album is truly one of the soundtracks of my life. The follow up release to this album was “New Jersey,” which was released on September 13, 1988. New Jersey went 7x Platinum in the US and has sold over 18 million records world wide. New Jersey debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200, and reached #1 the following week where it spent four weeks at the top. New Jersey actually holds the record for a hard rock album with the most Top 10 Hit Singles at 5. No other hard rock band has ever equaled or broken this feat. “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll be There For You” both hit #1 on the Billboard 100, while “Born to be My Baby”, “Lay Your Hands on Me” and “Living in Sin” all made the Top 10. “Blood on Blood” even made the Top 20 giving the album a whopping 6 Top 20 Hits, a feat that may never be equaled by a hard rock band. The Fifth Studio Album by Bon Jovi, “Keep the Faith” was released on November 3, 1992. This album saw both a style and image change for Bon Jovi. Keep the Faith peaked at Number Five on the Billboard 200. The title track Keep the Faith reached 29 on the Billboard Charts, while Bed of Roses reached #10. Keep the Faith was followed up by “These Days” (Sixth Studio Album), “Crush” (Seventh Studio Album), “Bounce” (Eighth), “Have a Nice Day”, “Lost Highway,” and “The Circle.” Their next album “What about Now” is due out in March 2013. In total, Bon Jovi has sold over 135 million albums world wide putting them right behind Def Leppard near the top all time. As I sit here listening to The Greatest Hits compilation the music still gives me goosebumps. Most people think if Slippery When Wet and New Jersey when they hear Bon Jovi, but all of their material is top notch. Their style and image may have changed, but Bon Jovi is still a Rock Legend that will definitely be a first ballot hall of fame selection when the time comes. The song “It’s My Life” is one of my all time favorite anthems. Just listen to the lyrics. It hits everyone that has been through trials and tribulations to the core. My other personal favorite is “I’d Die For You” from Slippery When Wet. Bon Jovi is not only one of the Top Bands to come out of New Jersey…but also one of the Top Bands of all time. When you think music and New Jersey…Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, and Skid Row are at the top of my list. Bon Jovi may not be at the top everyone’s must hear list, but in the past twenty years there have not been too many bands to influence rock n roll much more than Bon Jovi. Livin on a Prayer, You Give Love a Bad Name, Wanted Dead or Alive are the staples. However, you can listen to every Bon Jovi track and you can relate to the themes and lyrics in one way or another. BON JOVI is truly a Legend of New Jersey.
